Frequently Asked Questions
What is Alpha in a private equity fund?
Alpha measures the excess return of an investment relative to a benchmark, after adjusting for risk. It answers the question: “Did the manager outperform what we would expect, given the level of risk taken and the market environment?”
How are Fund and GP Alpha calculated?
Fund Alpha is calculated as a private market equivalent (PtME) using the Direct Alpha method and a private equities market index. Using a customised private market benchmark also allows computing Pure Alpha. GP Alpha is averaged across funds.
Where does the league table data come from?
Fund data is curated from a range of sources including data vendors, regulatory filings, annual reports and information requests. Index data comes from privateMetrics. All Calculations are reviewed by the EDHEC Infra and Private Assets Research Institute.
